some photos from the past months or so…

Insert Coins @ Oxford Art Factory

This reminded me of a mural I did for uni, but better. :(

Camden. He was…interesting to say the least.

Polar Knights @ The Annandale Hotel

Long time no blog. Must have something to do with the absurd amount of work uni is throwing at me. Still, here are some photos I took over the past months or so. The first few are of a new event at Oxford Art Factory called ‘Insert Coins’ which is basically a night of old school games, bands, murals and drinking. Quite fun actually, I hope they continue it. I also went to see Polar Knights the other week when they play The Annandale Hotel. I think they deserve more fans! They make such pretty music + my friend is the drummer! Their EP launch is in November. I will wear their shirts!

Most of my friends have now graduated from University, which I’m pretty jealous about. We all celebrated two weeks ago. One my lovelies ate at Rockpool while I dined at Cotton Duck with another lovely lady. The food was divine and the restaurant was so beautifully laid out and decorated. I was kicking myself for not bringing Napoleon (my D90) with me to capture it all. I was too busy trying to make it on time! Next time, I promise! I had the Lamb Shoulder which came straight off the bone because it was so tender and then 3 different flavoured sorbet for dessert which was a delightfully refreshing because although the servings size of my main meal looked small it was incredibly filling. We then headed to GoodGod, more specifically The Dip to drink and munch on some snackies (what, more food?). I was sort of disappointed because I wanted their Buttermilk Chicken but didn’t get any. I get the feeling I shall never unite with any of The Dip’s chicken dishes, I always seem to miss out. We then headed into the Danceteria and although I didn’t particularly enjoy the music being played, my friend’s drunk dancing totally made up for it. Overall, quite a wonderful night.

I can’t wait till I graduate! It’s so close I can almost taste it, but I know the journey there is going to be hell! I haven’t really done anything for my Major Project and I can literally feel time slipping through my fingers. Stressful times ahead. On the bright side, I pre-ordered an iPhone 4S today! I regret to say it was with Vodafone. Please don’t ask why, I’m already regretting it. :(

spend all in the grass

The Vaccine’s backdrop

Jinja Safari

someone’s bag @ British Sea Power. how rad is that?

James Blake

The Hives bathing in their own awesomeness!

dananananaykroyd!

dananananaykroyd! This is my favourite picture! Pretty sure that guy in the checkered shirt high-fived me…?

Foster The People.

The Grates. Patience is fierce.

The Mars Volta. mind. is. blown.

Regina Specktor. She’s sweet.

Hannah from Group Love. Another victim of my over zooming.

Ulrich from Cloud Control. I’ve come to the conclusion that you cannot take a picture of this dude without something obscuring his face one way or another. I even made a bet with a friend.

Oh Mercy. I want to make out with his voice.

I predict a riot! Kaiser Chiefs.

Now this is truly amazing. I took this photo from the top of hill at the amphitheatre of Jarvis Crocker from Pulp. Look at that zoom power. It’s like I was standing in the pit.

How it really looks from where I was standing. Actually, this might have been zoomed in as well…

I think the opening picture to this post is most appropriate. What on earth were you expecting when I said I’ll be back with photos? I hope it wasn’t too much because I come bearing nothing but shitty photographs taken with my Lumix because I forgot to buy film for my Pentax K1000. Sadly I only learnt how to use the ‘zoom’ function on my Lumix two days into the festival and abused the hell out of it by zooming in REAL close to the musicians. So close you can almost see the boogers up their noses. Hawt. I won’t be posting those disturbing photos though, I feel sorry for my victims the musicians.

Splendour In the Grass (which I have now dubbed ‘spend all in the grass’ because it’s so costly to go to/stay at/survive) is one of Australia’s biggest annual musical festival. Born in 2001 (haha) the festival has seen many great bands take it’s stages. OMG what the fuck am I writing? A wiki page? Let’s talk about the 2011 version. Right, so I admit the lineup this year wasn’t as ‘ah-maz-ing’ as it was last year but how can I say no to Kanye West? HAHA. Not. I think James Blake, The Hives, Friendly Fires and Coldplay was really why I decided to go. I was not disappointed. The only thing I was disappointed in was the cost of public transport in Queensland. Who told your Premier that it’s okay to charge us $5 to travel between domestic and international terminals and who in their right mind would want to pay $20 just to get to the city from the airport? Well clearly we weren’t, cos thats what we paid. Not only that, it cost us close to $100 to get to and from Splendour’s site which was in Woodford – a little ole town in god knows where. At least they had Woolworths.

Since we were flying to Queensland we hired a tent with Tent City because we’re lazy bastards who can’t be bothered to carry/put up our own tent. Tent City promised us a clean, comfortable tent with a ‘bed’ and ‘light’ upon our arrival. I think we have a different definition of bed and light to Tent City. They seem to think a 80cm wide metal fold out bed-like apparatus with a very thin mattress on top can be classified as a bed. I think it should be called a seating device. Oh well, at least we didn’t have to use the showers/toilets that ‘normal’ campers were using. Ours came on the back of a truck and we got a place to charge our phones/cameras and cook our meals. Which is a lot better than trying to cook outside your tents in the freezing cold (I like to eat late at night – better described as early morning actually).

The weather wasn’t bad – didn’t rain or anything. Daytime was nice and warm but nights were a killer. It was so cold that I felt like my face was going to fall off because of frostbite…or something. That would have been interesting.

We always started our days early, rising at about 7:30-8 o’clock every morning, just so we could shower and not have to wait in line for too long. We also liked to cook our own breakfast. Simple things like oats, toast and scrambled eggs. Delicious. People stared because they were jealous of my friend’s cooking skills. I stare back with my ‘i-hope-this-looks-like-i’m-giving-you-dirties-and-not-like-i’m-mentally-retarded’ face. I’m sure it just looked like I was squinting or mentally incompetent or something. I blame my asian parents for giving me small eyes.

On the first day we saw World End’s Press play one of the first sets at the Mix Up tent. They were good. Much dancing was done by the band members as I watch on in awe. Then off to see British Sea Power and Jinja Safari at the Amphitheatre. We saw the second half of Kimbra’s set at the M.G tent and there we spot two guys from Last Dinosaurs (quickly ran away, long story about that…). After Kimbra we wait around for Wild Beasts where we witness one of the band members groping himself…what? Then its back to the Mix Up tent for some James Blake and his infamous silences. Then we run to see Glasvegas at the Amphitheatre and after that its a little bit of relaxing time as we eat hot chips and watch The Black Seeds at the Mix Up tent. We then head to the Jager Lodge to see James Blake’s DJ set. It was embarrassing, as everyone just stands there looking at him/taking photos instead of dancing. We leave, it’s too weird for us. We wait a horribly long time for Does It Offend You Yeah? whilst watching a scary, slightly larger DJ dancing to his tunes with no shirt on. We then get abused by some Newcastle…or was it Wollongong dudes who tell us to cheer up and dance. My friend tells them to fuck off. HAHA. Then its off to see The Hives. We arrive and the Amphitheatre is packed, we try to get closer. No luck. They were great though! We leave to shower as everyone is looking at us like we’re from outer space because Kanye West is due to come on next and we’re leaving. Comments like “why would you leave?” were being thrown around. Why would you complain? I’m giving you more space. Dumbass. That’s right people, I did not see Kanye West. Apparently it was amazing. My shower was more amazing I think. :)

I could go on, but WordPress is telling me I’m 900 words in. Thats a looooong post. I can’t be bothered. Maybe next time…right now, I gotta clean my room and learn how to make Hollandaise sauce. Cos I really like eggs benedict.

there’s a first time for everything

I shot a gig for FasterLouder on Thursday. It was Loon Lake’s ‘Not Just Friends’ tour and it was at Good God Small Club, a nice little bar/club on Liverpool St in the midst of Sydney’s CBD. It was my first ‘official’ shoot – if you can even call it that. What I mean by official is that I didn’t have to sneak my camera in and feel sort of awkward every time the security guard looked at me. Plus I was ‘on the list’…which made me feel sort of cool. Well, cooler than I really am anyway. Now, I’m not sure if I can consider this a very good first-gig-to-shoot kind of memory. The band was great, don’t get me wrong, I love all live music, but the god damn light was a bitch to photograph in. The stage lighting in this place was literally one main light. And it was red. Yes, red. The bane of all live music photographer’s existence. This light was thoughtfully put on the left hand side of the stage, making sure that everyone  who stood too far to the right or in the back (the drummers) would be overshadowed by whoever was standing in the middle. Perfect. So I was there with my little D90 and 50mm f1.8 struggling to get a good exposure. I even bumped my ISO from 800 to about 1200.

My photos are grainy, which makes me sad. Very sad because I felt like I didn’t do the show justice. It was a great show, even my best friend, who I dragged along with me agreed. This friend spend 80% of the time dancing by herself because I was too busy snapping, reviewing, cursing, rinsing and repeating. I’m sorry friend. I love you for coming. All this really makes me want to buy a full-frame camera that would break my bank account and cause me to live in debt for the next 2-3 years. Worth it? If I do buy one, I can only justify it by saying: it’s for the love of music and photography. And, yes, I will upload my splendour photos soon. The shittiness of those photos will be also be explained in the next post.

the end of an era and my childhood

harry potter & the deathly hallows part two

Spoiler Alerts

Right now I’m sort of suffering from post-Harry Potter blues. Going to see the last ever Harry Potter movie from the epic series was both exciting and sort of sad. I grew up reading Harry Potter, the first book my dad EVER bought me was a HP book, so it’s kind of special to me. They say it’s the end of an era, I say it’s end of my childhood. I now have to act my age and accept it’s all over.

I went to see the last ever Harry Potter movie at the midnight screening and I don’t really know what I think about it. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t incredible either. I’m sort of disappointed at how they treated Lupin, Tonks and Fred’s death and also the final battle scene between Harry and Lord Voldemort wasn’t epic enough.

Little Things only Soth would notice and care about:

  • Ron and Harry are very WHITE, so white they almost blinded me when they took off their shirts 10 mins into the movie. If it wasn’t for the 3D glasses, I’d be blind. My advice: bring sunglasses if you’re watching it in 2D.
  • Ron’s probably had one too many butter beers – evident in the scene mentioned above and also when he’s like 30 something with 3 kids. Take note of his beer belly.
  • Snape crying is one of the most UNATTRACTIVE thing in the world.
  • How come when Harry went to collect Snape’s tear it only seemed to be – I don’t know – like 3 drops and when he actually goes to pour it into the Pensive it’s like a fucking waterfall. Details man, details!
  • Cho Chang repeated a year. Isn’t she meant to have graduated already – whats with the uniform?
  • You will witness probably the biggest Patronus in the entire history of Harry Potter and Patronus..patroni(?).
  • Hermione looks the same in 19 years and so does Ginny except I think she went a little  TOO crazy with the blowdryer and a round brush.
  • Harry has chest fluff and a strange six pack.

I will probably go see this again, just to laugh at the end of the movie. They look hilarious, unfortunately only my friend and I found it amusing on the night of it’s premiere. Y U NO LAUGH AT IT TOO?

Feb Trip: at St Kilda Beach ; Exploring the café culture on Brunswick St in Fitzroy ; Sweeties at Southern Cross station

Melbourne is probably one of my most favourite places in the world. As corny and cliched as it sounds, I find Melbourne incredibly inspiring and when I’m there I just want to create. Ideas transpire, concepts take form and I get excited and motivated, something that lacks back home where it’s cold, dreary and dark. When I’m home my ideas never seem to develop far enough, but in Melbourne these ideas take new forms, they twist, turn corners and take me somewhere new. That’s the main reason for my affinity with this city. Other reasons exist too like the food and the little streets overfilling with cafes, graffiti, fashion boutiques and vintage stores.

On my latest trip to Melbourne (in May), I attended the agIdeas Design Conference, which was an eye-opening and inspiring event. The designers that spoke were some of the most recognized in the industry and I had the real pleasure of meeting and exchanging a couple of words with Georges Antoni - an Australian fashion photography (will do a feature post on him soon). He was incredibly nice and drew me a ‘Lebanese’ smiley face and signed my book. Ha! The sad truth is that I fell asleep throughout most of the conference and don’t remember many of the presentations – the ones I can recall off the top of my head are: Nick Bell, Francis Ring (fell asleep half way – sorry dance is not my thing), Dean Gorissen (amazing illustrator), Jungle Boys (absolute hilarity), Simon Pole from Woods BagotFanette Mellie (stunner), Adam Hunt (inspiring), Richard Nylon (so eccentric!), Ken Miki (just wow), Guy Grossi (fell asleep half way), Adrian McGregorScott Mellor (not my fav, came off a little pretentious), Georges AntoniSanky (fav), Erik Adigard (brilliant!), Michael Lugmay from Toko, Nicolas Hogio (car designer), Michael Jankie and Susan Bonds. That probably like only 30% of everyone, and I mean no disrespect to anyone whose presentation I may have fallen asleep through, I just spent too little time sleeping and more time playing Guitar Hero on my friend’s iPad.

Unfortunately, I spent less time exploring and eating compared to my previous Melbourne trip in Feb. During my Feb trip, I spent most of my time eating, drinking, shopping, partying and going to gigs. Quite eventful compared to my trip in May, but the again, it was a 9 day trip and not a measly 3 day thing for Uni.

I’m contemplating whether or not I should make a 3rd trip to Melbourne in September. I was planning to go for Semi-Permanent but I’m afraid I will be by myself as I have no friends that would be interested in sitting in a convention centre for 8 hrs a day, for 2 days listening to amazing designers speak about their work. Sigh. I suppose the coffee is another great reason to go.

i have no idea…

Flowers on Fitzroy St, Melbourne

To be perfectly honest, I have no idea what I’m doing or what this blog is going to be about. I just felt like coding the shit out of WordPress and seeing how far I could go…pretty far I think.

I’ve opened and kept about a million blogs since I first discovered the internet in 2002, but I always seem to lose interest after a week or two and neglect to update them. I attribute this lost of interest to my uninteresting life which pretty much consists of work, uni and lots of tv. Not very exciting…

But it isn’t always like that, there are times where I go out and do interesting shit too – like going to gigs, music festival, other cities and meeting awesome people…you know, shit interesting people with social lives do. And it’s those times that make me want to keep a blog. Blogging about these times will act as a reassurance that I’m no lame, sad homebody who has no life. I too…have…adventures…outside my house…maybe.

So this blog is a record of everything.

If I can be bothered to update it, that is…

Don’t mind the errors…if there are any. I hand-coded the theme from scratch so it’s still a little dodgey. My PHP skill is a little rusty. I’ll get better! Off to do exciting social things now, like spam people on facebook and immerse myself with TV (currently watching: Winners & Losers) whilst indulging myself with Tim Tams…oh yeah, I’m so hip.
